Clay offers us both the reminder of our connectivity to the earth we come from (and will go back to), as well as the excitement of possibilities that creating something entails. To morph a natural element into an object is to create reverence, and to be able to live in tandem with those objects is an exercise in both humility and aspiration. Eliot Caldwell understands the balance between humility and reverence, hand-making clay works that serve as earth totems for the home.

Eliot Caldwell Studio draws deep inspiration from her family’s ranch, Las Tuzas— a singular place where the connection to her Texas homeland, her Spanish heritage, and the influence of Mexican culture are physically unified and create a space of history and creativity. Eliot’s ceramics practice took life in Las Tuzas, where she was inspired to create pieces that would fit in the space as the family restructured a new phase that merged the past with the present. Built in the 1800’s, the ranch sits on the Pecos River. “What would look good at the ranch?” is a question that has continued to motivate her practice, which is evident in the shapes that mimic the ranch and its adjoining desert, the adobe architecture, as well as the natural colors and elements that merge these totems from the earth to the home. Intended to add her mark to the family heritage, Eliot’s work is meant to connect to a person rather than take over a space, in that way creating private and personal moments through design.

Eliot Caldwell was born and raised in West Texas. She received her higher education in Lubbock and in Los Angeles, and is currently based in Nashville, Tennessee, where she hand-produces all pieces out of her studio.
